Paphos is one of the most pleasant resorts on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. It is steeped in ancient history and has some of the island's best beaches and yet still retains a relaxed charm. If you would like a luxury holiday in Paphos boutique hotels are situated around the resort, offering excellent facilities.
Thanks to its historical importance, the town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors interested in ancient Greek and Roman history will be spoiled for choice with numerous sites displaying remains and some of the best mosaics in Cyprus.
The town lies on a rocky hill and is split into two parts. Kato Paphos, or Lower Paphos, is the harbor area and Ano Paphos, or Upper Paphos, which is also referred to as Ktima, is further up the hill. The best shopping is to be found in Ktima but most of the archaeological sites are found in the lower town. The port area has been revamped and the harbor is crammed full of private yachts, tour boats and fishing boats. The harbor is lined with restaurants and tavernas, often with fresh, locally caught fish on their menu.
The most famous image of Paphos is the Rock of Aphrodite, a beautiful area of coastline off the old road to Limassol. Legend says it was where Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, was born and that it was from this rock that she arose from the stormy sea. Visitors will find a car park, souvenir shop and restaurant here.
Whether you want to stay close to the harbor, near the town center or along the coastline by the best beaches in Paphos boutique hotels can be found. Coral Bay is said to be one of Cyprus's best beaches, with its golden sands and warm clear sea. If you want a beach with amenities and water sports, head for Coral Bay or Kato Paphos or Latsi beaches. If you prefer quiet and isolation, try the Akamas Peninsula beaches around Lara.
If you prefer sightseeing to sunbathing, there is plenty to keep you occupied in Paphos. One of the best-known sites is the Tombs of the Kings, so named not because kings are buried there but because the tombs were thought to be so magnificent. The site is a large necropolis in the north of Lower Paphos and many of the underground tombs were built as long ago as the 4th Century BC. They are carved out of solid rock and it is thought that local high officials and aristocrats were buried here.
The nearby Paphos Archaeological Park features monuments and sites dating back to the Middle Ages, the Roman era and even as long ago as prehistoric times. The park's centerpiece is the display of mosaic floors in four Roman villas but it contains many other important monuments including the Odeon, the Asklipieion, the Saranta Kolones or Forty Columns Fortress, the Agora and the Limeniotissa ruins of an early Christian Basilica.
There are also many Greek Orthodox monasteries in the area that are worth a visit. The best known is probably the Kykkos Monastery, high up in the Troodos Mountains. There is a village around the monastery and plenty of souvenir shops and cafes.
If you want a taste of luxury during your stay in Paphos boutique hotels will service you well. The many five-star hotels offer a range of facilities including 24-hour reception desks and tour desks, laundry and dry cleaning, room service, babysitting and ironing. For business visitors many have meeting and banqueting rooms and fax and photocopying facilities and most hotels have internet access.
The air-conditioned rooms are spacious, often with a TV and minibar and most will have a balcony from which you can watch the famous Paphos sunsets. Many hotels have family rooms and bridal suites available. The hotel bars and lounges offer a cool area in which to relax with a cup of coffee or a glass of Cypriot wine and the hotel restaurants offer a varied menu featuring local specialties alongside international dishes.
